- Nora and some dogs at Lemieux
- Lemieux Island, nov 3rd, 2010, the day Cesar came to Ottawa
Nora McLoughlin and Dave Docherty are a married Ottawa couple who are members in good standing of their professional organizations, teaching and engineering, from which they retired a couple of years ago to embrace their bliss: training and partying dogs in nature.
Nora is a Member In Good Standing of the Ontario College of Teachers, and is now retired from High School Teaching in a career that spanned 18 years in Inner-City Toronto. She has a Masters degree in Education and several years self-taught dog training. She initially trained at BRBK9 dog obedience school in Mississauga. She has taught Puppy Class and Obedience I at Centretown Veterinary Clinic, Ottawa.
Exercise, Discipline, Affection.
Exercise, Discipline, Affection. Cesar’s keys to a well-balanced dog. Owners of unbalanced dogs (separation anxiety, obsession, excessive barking, out of control destructive chewing) time and again, (see Testimonials) have found a seachange has occurred in the behaviour and general well being of their dog, independent of age and size, within two weeks of our daily care.
Cesar Millan’s admonishments to never crate an unexercised dog, (a house is a crate, he said in Ottawa when he was here) and to crate him a maximum of four hours a day, has inspired millions of dog owners to subscribe to the now-commonly agreed upon formula for a happy sleepy dog:
Your Dog As Prisoner:
Don’t choose a crate for your dog all day. Even a home is a crate, as Cesar said when he was here. Some care providers keep your dog in their back garden or in their house or storefront glass crate all day. Dogs need nature.
Their noses need to be on the ground, moving forward in a pack, with friends. They need far more exercise than the house-bound daycare or storefront care provider can give them. They need to move and explore constantly, unconfined to the PetSmart parking lot twice a day, or to the back gardens of our competitors. Your dog is not a human being, content to curl up all day. Frustration breeds anxiety. And anxiety breeds unbalanced dogs.
Off Leash is Off the Hook!
We take our pack to any number of safe, enclosed public off-leash park spaces (entirely legal). We are the only dogwalkers who consistently, and actively organize pack competitions such as fetch, race, and tug o war, and we reinforce the basic respect commands daily with all dogs. Large dogs compete in swimming races in the summer in the now-clean Ottawa River off Lemieux Island, and we race your dog in winter to keep it warm.
Get Into the Swim of Things
We teach non swimming dogs whose owners wish them to swim by getting in the river with them. Small dogs are kept active, wrestling with one another, hiking, and playing with their friends. No shivering small dog is left to fend for itself. We keep your dog moving, hiking, up and down hills, running, and playing when we are not coddling and coaching him.
Bolting Babies!
We train your dog not to bolt from our care via keeping her/him on leash at first, and gently integrating him/her into off-leash, well-socialized, follow-the-pack behaviour. We are the only off-leash dog-walkers who actively train your dog. We ensure the other members of the pack cannot bully, nor intimidate your dog via rigourous pre-off-leash training.
That S%$# Really Stinks!
We do regular sweeps of any off-leash area that includes cleanup of any doggie doodoo that may be left by other neglectful walkers. Dave single-handedly sweeps Lemieux Island every spring for all waste.
We ask you to please have all shots up to date and to use a program of Sentinel, Interceptor, or Revolution to ensure maximum protection of all dogs in the parks. Yes, dogs really do eat S&*%!
Direct Supervision
Direct supervision of your dog means every member of the pack is safe to the most reasonable expectation of dog safety in public space. Senior pack members have a tendency to rush to protect the smaller and newer members of our pack.
Unlike a number of non-training dog walkers, we are never pre-occupied by cell phone conversations. We are the most active cleaners of public dog space. Ask our competition if they assiduously clean up the messy waste of their dogs and others’. Parasites and other problems can only occur through laissez-faire dog management.
